NZ Association of Philosophy Conference 2023

The University of Waikato will host the 2023 New Zealand Association of Philosophers Conference.  The event will be held at Waikato's Tauranga Campus from 3-7 December.  It will kick off on 3 December with a mini-conference on te ao Māori and the philosophy curriculum in Aotearoa New Zealand. This mini-conference will be directly followed by a reception and the Presidential Address, which will be delivered by Justine Kingsbury.

CFP: The conference welcomes papers from all branches of philosophy.

Additional information about the mini-conference: We invite abstracts for papers that relate te ao Māori to topics covered in courses taught in philosophy departments in Aotearoa. These papers will bring Māori philosophy and Western philosophy into dialogue—perhaps by pointing out places where there are affinities between the two, perhaps by pointing out ways in which Māori philosophy challenges the norms and values of Western philosophy. Our hope is that after discussion at the mini-conference, revised versions of these papers will find a place in a published collection that will be a useful resource for philosophers and philosophy students in Aotearoa. We are also open to papers about whether, and if so how, this enterprise should be pursued by the mostly tauiwi inhabitants of philosophy departments in Aotearoa. 

The mini-conference will feature keynotes from Professor Carl Mika (Tuhourangi, Ngati Whanaunga) and Emma Maurice (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga), who are both affiliated with the University of Canterbury. If you wish to deliver a presentation, please complete the presentation proposal form.  In the form, you will be able to submit a title and abstract for the mini-conference, as well as a title and abstract for the rest of the conference.  You don't need to submit both, but you can if you wish.  Abstracts should be approximately 200-250 words.  You will also be asked if you plan to attend the mini-conference and an informal dinner at The Rising Tide, which will be on 4 December.

The deadline for submissions is 11 November at midnight.  Notifications of acceptance will be sent within one week of submission.  

Conference registration: If you will present at the conference or attend solely as an audience member, you must register below.

• Early Bird: until midnight 2 November
• Full: 2 November-midnight 19 November
• Postgraduate / Unwaged: until midnight 19 November

Postgraduate subsidy: The NZAP will offer a subsidy of $300 to up to seven postgraduate students who will present at the conference.  In the presentation proposal form, you will be asked to indicate whether you wish to be considered for this subsidy.  The subsidy will be paid as a reimbursement after the conference.

Accommodation: We have reserved 44 rooms at Selwyn Street Studios, our on-campus accommodation in Tauranga.  Accommodation can be booked upon checkout when paying the registration fee. Attendees arriving on 2 December should aim to check into Selwyn Street in the late afternoon.

Conference dinner:  The conference dinner will be held at The Phoenix on 6 December from 6-8 p.m.  You can pay for the conference dinner upon checkout when paying the registration fee.
