Position: Director, General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Institute

Associate Professor Gary Crosthwaite is the Director of the General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare.

As an Upper GI Surgeon with extensive experience in surgical oncology and laparoscopic surgery including oesophagogastrectomy, hiatus hernia repair, achalasia surgery and hernia surgery, he has a keen interest in evolving surgical techniques and developments.

He also has significant experience of PEOM for Achalasia and currently undertakes this procedure at Epworth.

Position: Specialist Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon

Jane O’Brien is a specialist breast and oncoplastic surgeon whose practice is exclusively confined to breast work, with a special interest in breast cancer in younger women and risk reduction surgery, including preventive nipple- sparing mastectomy and reconstruction.

Position: Specialist Breast Cancer Surgeon

Dr Chantel Thornton is a specialist Breast Cancer Surgeon. She was Dux of the University of Tasmania Medical School graduating with First Class Honours and was awarded eight University Prizes. She also completed a Bachelor of Medical Sciences and received a scholarship to complete an Honours Degree at the University of Hong Kong in 1998. She undertook surgical training at the Alfred Hospital and a Fellowship in Breast Cancer Surgery at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010.

In 2015 she received an Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Award. She is a Member of Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.
Her practice solely focuses on the surgical and multidisciplinary management of breast cancer and includes risk reducing mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy and nipple sparing mastectomy.


Chantel sits on several Philanthropic National boards and has previously held a position as an Honorary Lecturer at Monash University.


She has private rooms at Epworth Hospital – Agora Centre for Women’s Health, and works at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre- Peter Mac Callum Cancer Centre and St. Vincent's Breast Screen.

Position: Obstetrician

Dr Glenn Gardener is a maternal fetal medicine specialist and Director of the Mater Centre for Maternal Fetal Medicine at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals.

Dr Gardener has a long held interest in fetal therapy including in-utero surgery and is currently the only specialist in Australia and New Zealand performing fetal surgery for diaphragmatic hernia and spina bifida. He regularly performs surgery for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, in-utero blood transfusions and other complex in-utero procedures.

With a particular interest in the prevention of stillbirth, Dr Gardener is involved in research and is a current board member for the International Stillbirth Alliance and leads a Fetal Therapy Special Interest Group through the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ).

Dr Gardener is actively involved in teaching obstetric ultrasound and passing on his skills to new doctors.

Position: Specialist Endocrine and Breast Surgeon

Dr Laura Chin-Lenn is a Melbourne born and bred surgeon. She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne in 2001. She trained in General Surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in General Surgery in 2010.

 

Following General Surgery training, Dr Laura dedicated three years to subspecialty fellowship training. She was the first Endocrine and General Surgery fellow at the Western Hospital in Melbourne. She then spent two years at the University of Calgary, Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Canada as an accredited fellow of Surgical Oncology (Society of Surgical Oncology program) where she focussed on Breast Surgery. She simultaneously undertook an Endocrine Surgery fellowship in Canada's only accredited program with the American Association of Endocrine Surgery, working with one of the most prominent endocrine surgeons in Canada.

She has public hospital appointments at Western Health, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Breastscreen Victoria and operates privately at Epworth Freemason's Hospital.

Mr Masters is an experienced surgeon with training in breast and thyroid surgery and is registered as qualified upper and lower GI endoscopist. He is also Interested in laparoscopic and open hernia surgery and surgical oncology.

Position: General Surgeon, Breast Surgeon and Endocrine Surgeon

Mr Su-Wen Loh is a specialist surgeon with expertise in breast, thyroid and parathyroid diseases. He is located in Melbourne.

After completing General Surgery, Su-Wen specifically trained in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. His specific interest lies in finding the optimal pathway for management of this disease, while providing a thoughtful and caring approach.

Position: Breast Surgeon

Melanie is a specialist breast surgeon; her special interests include oncoplastic breast surgery and breast ultrasound.

She trained in general surgery at the Alfred Hospital obtaining her FRACS in 2002. She spent three years in the UK undertaking further training in breast surgery, working at Castle Hill Hospital, Hull, the Edinburgh Breast Unit and the Western Infirmary Glasgow and the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, including an Oncoplastic Fellowship year at the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit.

Melanie joined the Epworth Breast Service in 2013. She has public appointments at the Alfred, Monash Medical Centre and BreastScreen Victoria.

Mr Craig Murphy specialises in services for general surgery and specialist breast cancer surgical treatments. General surgery includeshernia surgery, gastro-intestinal surgery including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and colorectal surgery including both upper/lower endoscopies in the form of gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Position: Specialist Breast and Endocrine Surgeon

After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1997, Dr Joanne Chionh completed her advanced surgical training at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She furthered her training with a clinical Fellowship in Endocrine Surgery at Hôpital la Timone in Marseille, France as well as a Fellowship in Breast and Endocrine Surgery at St Vincents’ Hospital, Melbourne.

Position: Breast and Endocrine Surgeon

Michael is a Breast & Endocrine Surgeon with over 22 years of experience, involving over 10,000 surgical cases. As an early adopter of bedside ultrasound, he regularly performs image guided biopsy/aspiration for breast and thyroid lesions.

Michael has a keen interest in oncoplastic breast surgery, including latissimus dorsi reconstruction and therapeutic mammoplasty. He consults and operates at Epworth Eastern, and publicly at Eastern Health (Box Hill & Maroondah Hospitals)

Outside of work, Michael is a keen (but average) tennis player and a football tragic. He speaks fluent mandarin and Cantonese, and is better accomplished in his knowledge of chinese history than sports.
