His training included his Cardiology fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, his PhD at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, and post-doctoral research and interventional fellowship at Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne. He established the first dedicated Cardiac CT and MR units in the Asia Pacific region, as well as leading the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the University of Adelaide as the Helpman Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, a position he has held since 2004. He has published over 180 manuscripts, 5 book chapters, and co-edited a Cardiovascular Textbook. He leads a number of novel international multi-centre cardiovascular therapy trials, and his clinical and research expertise spans natriuretic peptide and stem cell therapies though to transcatheter valve implantation and renal artery denervation therapy. He sits on numerous industry advisory boards, journal editorial boards and government advisory groups. He is internationally renowned for his interventional and imaging academic output, and early development programs for novel therapies in cardiovascular disease. He has run numerous first in human interventional trials for novel devices, including novel coronary stent designs and renal artery denervation. He is a leading cardiologist in the Asia Pacific region, serving as the Director of National Heart Centre and Chairman of National Medical Research Council in Singapore for 5 years. Prof. Lim pioneered coronary intervention in China in 1986, and helped to establish numerous coronary intervention units throughout China. His chief research and clinical interests are aortic valve replacement utilising the ROSS procedure, for which he is a world expert, an operation which he has pioneered in this country. His other main area of interest is in adult congenital cardiac surgery, an area in which he has performed over 900 congenital cardiac surgery procedures since the 1990s. He has previously been President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (ANZSCTS), and also he has been Chairman of the Board of Studies for Cardiothoracic Surgery Training in Australia and New Zealand (RACS).

He completed his MBBS at Melbourne University in 1988 and attained his FRACP in 1996. Paul completed a PhD in 1998 in cardiac electrophysiology. His post doctorate studies were at the University of California, San Francisco, USA from 1998-2000. Paul has also received a number of prestigious awards including the Young Investigator Award in Research for The North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology in 1998, The Ralph Reader Prize for The Cardiac Society of Australia & New Zealand in 1998 and the Premiers Award for Medical Research in 2000. He is actively engaged in clinical arrhythmia research at Royal Melbourne Hospital with an emphasis on atrial fibrillation, stroke prevention and the effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on the heart. He is currently running studies analysing sudden arrhythmic death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and attenuated approaches to ablation of paroxysmal AF. He is responsible also for the clinical supervision and training of other electrophysiologists and PhD candidates. Paul speaks fluent Italian. His training in Cardiology was at the Alfred Hospital and further postgraduate training in Interventional Cardiology was undertaken at Stanford University Medical Centre in the United States. His professional interests include general and interventional cardiology, with particular interests in structural heart disease and hypertension. The developing areas of percutaneous valve replacement and interventional techniques for the treatment of common conditions such as hypertension are particular interests. He has published his clinical and research work in peer reviewed manuscripts on subjects including the novel techniques of percutaneous aortic valve replacement and renal denervation for refractory hypertension.
