This series of five full-day, kanohi ki te kanohi workshops is designed for newly graduated teachers working with students in years 0-3, teachers returning to the profession, and teachers new to the schooling system in Aotearoa.
Applying educational theory in your practice can be a challenge, especially when you’re starting on your teaching journey or returning after an extended break in teaching. Our team of experienced facilitators will work alongside you to explore effective pedagogy while offering a range of teaching strategies and resources to implement back in the classroom. These workshops are hands-on, dialogic, and are a great way to network with other teachers like you.

By fostering a culture where all voices are valued, teachers can create environments where strong teacher-student relationships form the foundation for meaningful learning. A strong classroom culture boosts students' confidence and curiosity, making learning a collective and joyful journey.

As a leader, facilitator and coach for Te Whai Toi Tangata - Institute of Professional Learning at the University of Waikato, I provide professional learning and development support for principals, teachers and students that align with the New Zealand Curriculum and Ministry of Education Priorities. My passion to think differently about education and how we can make a difference for all has been illuminated through my experiences as a primary teacher, facilitator of professional learning and a community educator. My strengths are:
- co-constructing professional learning development (PLD) for teachers, leaders and students with a specific focus on raising all student achievement
- facilitating PB4L restorative practice professional learning opportunities with students, staff, leaders, and communities of schools that promote relational practices and ultimately engage learners in learning
- ensuring NZC is central to all professional learning and development and models effective pedagogy and teaching as inquiry
- providing school teachers and principals with the support, knowledge and dispositions to reflect upon and engage in strength-based leadership practices related to the leadership of local curriculum
- leading conversations underpinned by coaching and mentoring frameworks that promote transformational change and growth of students, teachers and leaders
- designing and facilitating workshops, courses and symposia across a range of contexts
- delivering in-depth and short-term leadership development contract work in schools where required.

The key to learning is risk taking and honing in on the associated skills to cognitively process what happens as we take risks. Learning is a basic human right and we all have a responsibility to each other; the journey of learning can be a personal and social one, how much richer it will be if we are open to challenge and share our growth with others.

This session will explore self-reflection and active listening and encourages you to step out of your comfort zone to hear the voices and perspectives of others. By understanding the historical understandings and implications in relation to Te Tiriti o Waitangi today, kaiako can be better supported to create a Tiriti-informed, Tiriti-centric classroom for all ākonga.

Professional Learning and Development (PLD) needs to be useful and practical while supporting and challenging our educational professionals. As a facilitator, I bring energy and enthusiasm to teachers supporting them to develop confidence and capability in teaching particularly science at primary school. Establishment of collaborative partnerships encourage the growth of teacher confidence and supports the development of reflection, which enhances teaching and learning.
In Aotearoa New Zealand all teachers are charged with demonstrating commitment to tangata whenua and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnerships. I am deeply invested in developing conversations that support teachers and schools to engage with this process in an ongoing evolving way. Unpacking and upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi serves to build cohesiveness and weave student centred learning throughout the education system.
Suiting the needs of the school is my focus with a conscientious approach. Being a lifelong learner, seeking out opportunities to learn and to challenge my own understanding, allows me to provide critical and relevant processes for supporting teachers, schools, family, whānau and communities to improve outcomes for all.

Our identities as people who use functional maths in our lives impacts on how we teach maths in the classroom. Effective mathematical practices support student engagement, mastery of concepts and procedural fluency. Teacher knowledge of task types, attention to vocabulary and mathematical communication supports development of student mathematical thinking, justification and discussion.

Student learning in mathematics and professional development of teachers and school leaders is an exciting realm for me as a skilled educator. Being an avid learner, I am driven by my commitment to ensure New Zealand children have equitable and current opportunities to engage in high quality learning programmes.
During my 18 years as a teacher and facilitator, I have acquired many skills in teaching and leadership and have developed a particular strength in teaching mathematics. Using collaborative facilitation practices, we can lift achievement for students and inspire others to excel in the teaching and learning of maths, supported by my application of deep subject knowledge.
With adult learning and the professional learning of teachers being of interest to me, I have taken a path of study and research into developing effective middle leadership in schools. I work to empower school management, middle leaders and teachers in providing effective mathematics education for all students’ years 0-8.
