Position: Director, General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Institute

Associate Professor Gary Crosthwaite is the Director of the General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare.

As an Upper GI Surgeon with extensive experience in surgical oncology and laparoscopic surgery including oesophagogastrectomy, hiatus hernia repair, achalasia surgery and hernia surgery, he has a keen interest in evolving surgical techniques and developments.

He also has significant experience of PEOM for Achalasia and currently undertakes this procedure at Epworth.

Position: Chief Medical Officer, Executive Director and Medical Services

Associate Professor Gregor Brown is a physician gastroenterologist and Head of Endoscopy at The Alfred Hospital Melbourne.  He is chair-elect of the Conjoint Committee for the Certification of Training in GI Endoscopy, sits on the Clinical Advisory Group to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, and led the review of the ‘Advances in Colonoscopy’ chapter of the current Australian Surveillance Colonoscopy Guidelines.  He is a past chair of the Australian GI Endoscopy Association, and remains active in the National Endoscopy Training Initiative.  After completing a PhD in Adelaide he spent a year at St Marks Hospital, London, as Endoscopy Fellow.  His main clinical interests are luminal gastroenterology and endoscopy including therapeutic gastroscopy/colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy. 

He is committed to training and research in colonoscopy technique and advanced polypectomy techniques, as well as coeliac disease, bowel preparation, capsule endoscopy, and device-assisted enteroscopy.

Position: Dean of Medicine

Geoffrey Metz is the Dean of Medicine at Epworth HealthCare.

He graduated in Medicine from Monash University then completed training in general medicine and gastroenterology at the Alfred Hospital, before spending 5 years at the Central Middlesex Hospital, London, where he completed MRCP and MD by thesis. Subsequently, Geoffrey has been in clinical practise at the Alfred and at Epworth Richmond.

Concurrently, he has had a deep interest in medical education and after terms on most of the committees of the RACP, was Chairman of Continuing Education/Continuing Professional Development before becoming College Vice-President then President.

He was the inaugural Director of Medical Education at Epworth Healthcare before becoming Dean of Medicine.

Position: Gastroenterologist

Don Cameron is a Melbourne paediatric gastroenterologist with a particular interest in endoscopy training. He is the immediate Past-President of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, and former Chairman of the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in GI Endoscopy, and Chairman of the Colonoscopy Re-certification pilot committee.

Position: Gastroenterologist

Dr Joshua Butt is a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist working predominantly across the north of Melbourne. Dr Butt undertook advanced training in Gastroenterology in Victoria before completing advanced endoscopy training with fellowships at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada.

Dr Butt holds public appointments as the Head of Endoscopy Services at Northern Health and Gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is interested in the patient experience and has conducted research including a study aiming to optimise dietary preparation for colonoscopy with the “White Diet”. He recently contributed to the bowel preparation section of the updated Clinical Practice Guideline for Surveillance Colonoscopy released by the Cancer Council and NHMRC.

Organisation: Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney

Position: Gastroenterologist

Cameron Bell is a Senior Staff Specialist in Gastroenterology at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney and a Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Sydney.  He has an active interest in bowel cancer and endoscopic training and quality. He is the chair of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia’s National Endoscopy Training Initiative and has been the national lead for the NETI Train the Colonoscopy Trainer program since 2009. He has developed two national colonoscopy quality improvement courses for GESA and convened national ERCP training workshops. He chaired the Working Parties which produced the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Surveillance Colonoscopy for Cancer Council Australia in 2011 and 2019, and was deputy chair of the Cancer Council Australia Working Party which revised the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention, Early Detection and Management of Colorectal Cancer, endorsed by the NH&MRC in 2017.  He is a member of the Clinical Advisory Group for the Australian National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.  He is a member of the World Endoscopy Organization and was involved in the recent development of the Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standards by the Australian Commission on Safety & Quality in Health Care.

Organisation: St Vincent’s Hospital

Position: Gastroenterologist

Dr Taylor trained in gastroenterology at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and in Edinburgh, Scotland and undertook further study in Germany. He completed a Doctor of Medicine research degree in 2000, on the assessment of new techniques in endoscopy. His areas of special interest are advanced interventional endoscopy, including removal of large colonic polyps, management of Barrett’s oesophagus and small bowel investigations. Dr Taylor is Head of Endoscopy at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and leads the Barrett’s endoscopic treatment programme at St Vincent’s. He is involved in ongoing clinical research in Barrett’s and other areas. Dr Taylor’s private practice is based at Eastern Gastrointestinal Specialists, Epworth Eastern Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital.

Position: General and Colorectal Surgeon

Mr Ian Hastie is a colorectal surgeon with expertise in bowel cancer and surgical oncology. His areas of interest include: inflammatory bowel disease, benign and malignant disease of the pelvis, complex fistula disease and faecal incontinence. Following Fellowship in Oxford, UK Mr Hastie is a pioneer in minimally invasive colorectal surgery with extensive experience in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He is credentialed in advanced endoscopy including colonoscopy and gastroscopy.

Mr Hastie is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Gastroenterology Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare. He has been an invited speaker at both international and local conferences. Mr Hastie has been involved in the training of colorectal surgeons, Registrars, Residents and medical students for over 15 years at both the Epworth and Royal Melbourne Hospitals.

Andrew Brett is a Gastroenterologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne and works at Epworth Richmond. He is the Consortium Director of Physician Training in The Greater Western Consortium and a General Physician at The Royal Melbourne Hospital

He has a major interest in General Gastroenterology, Oesophageal Manometry and endoscopic treatment of obesity.

Mark has 17-years of experience in Complex Upper Gastro-Intestinal and Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgery, with a strong interest in Complex Laparoscopic Surgery.

He completed his medical degree at Monash University with Honours and attained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He then undertook Subspecialist training at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne and The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. He currently consults and operates at the Epworth Hospital, Richmond and Monash Medical Centre. He has a strong interest in Surgical Education and he is the Surgical Supervisor at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton and the Surgical Lead for the Southern Clinical School at Monash University.

Position: Gastroenterologist

A/Prof Boussioutas is an academic gastroenterologist working in the field of gastrointestinal oncology. He is Associate Dean (Research Training) at the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; Deputy Director of Gastroenterology at Royal Melbourne Hospital and; Head of Gastroenterology at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He heads the GI division of the Familial Cancer Clinic at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and has an active research laboratory. He has a private practice in Richmond and is affiliated with Epworth Healthcare at the Richmond campus.

Dr Boussioutas’ research is focused on translational medicine with gastrointestinal programs spanning the entire GI tract. This includes disciplines such as epidemiology, screening and prevention, early diagnosis, molecular medicine and clinical outcomes research. He performs endoscopy and has expertise in endoscopic screening and therapeutics. He was on the expert committee writing the guidelines for Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer. He has been an invited expert on working groups convened by the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria in the areas: Colorectal Cancer, Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer and Endoscopy.

Position: Gastroenterologist

Dr. Peter Prichard has been consulting privately as a Gastroenterologist at Epworth Hospital, Richmond, since 1996. He also holds a public appointment as a Visiting Medical Specialist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Previous appointments have been as a Senior Staff Specialist at Flinders Medical Centre and Director of Gastroenterology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.

Dr. Peter Prichard has a particular interest in luminal gastroenterology, and the advanced endoscopic management of gastrointestinal conditions, including interventional gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and balloon enteroscopy. He has had a long-term role in registrar teaching of endoscopic skills. Additionally for many years he has developed computerized endoscopic reporting systems to assist with communication, audit and maintenance of quality endoscopy.

Position: Gastroenterologist

Geoff graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1985 and completed his residency years/Gastroenterology training at The Royal Melbourne and Austin Hospitals, followed by a PhD in Adelaide supervised by Prof Michael Horowitz and Prof John Dent and a postdoctoral position in Zurich Switzerland. He returned from Zurich and was appointed as a Gastroenterologist at the Repatriation General Hospital in Adelaide prior to his current appointment as Director of Gastroenterology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2002 (to the present time) and Clinical Associate Professor in the University of Melbourne.

His academic interests are in Neurogastroenterology and data acquisition/processing. Other appointments include recent chair of the Gastroenterology Specialist Advisory Committee of the RACP, board member of the GESA Council and current President of the Australasian Neurogastroenterology and Motility Association.

Position: Upper GI and Obesity Surgeon

Mr Dhan Thiruchelvam is an Upper GI and Obesity Surgeon in the General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare.

He is also a Senior Lecturer in the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery St Vincent’s .

He is appointed in the Upper GI and HPB Unit at St Vincent’s Melbourne and is the ANZGOSA Training Supervisor and HMO Surgical Supervisor . He also sits on the WCMICS Upper GI Tumour group.

Currently he undertakes the full range of Upper GI and Obesity surgical procedures both endoscopically and laparoscopically and is now undertaking Robotic training in complex Upper GI surgical cases.

His special interests include Anti reflux surgery, Obesity Surgery, Achalasia using POEM, Surgical Oncology, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Interventional Endoscopy and Laparoscopic hernia surgery.

He teaches widely at all levels of training from medical students up to post graduate level and has presented at many meetings.

He has published widely and current areas of research include new paradigms for Robotic Surgery in conjunction with the Melbourne Robotics Laboratory, Department of Engineering at University of Melbourne and Vanderbilt University USA . He is also developing 3D printing of tissue models for surgical training in conjunction with the University of Wollongong.

Position: Gastroenterologist

Tony studied medicine at Melbourne University and then trained at Royal Melbourne and Prince Henry’s Hospitals. Further post graduate studies, research and training in ERCP were undertaken at the Middlesex Hospital in London with Dr Peter Cotton. While in London he was the Clinical Director of the first randomised trial comparing percutaneous and endoscopic stents for the palliation of biliary obstruction due to malignancy. After returning to Melbourne in 1988 he served as a member and chairman of the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Endoscopy, member and treasurer of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, member and chair of the Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association. He was awarded the Gastrointestinal Society Distinguished Service Medal in 2004. He has been an international editor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, a co-author of the GESA and GENSA Infection Control in Endoscopy guidelines and has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. He has lectured and demonstrated interventional endoscopy workshops in Australia and overseas. Tony has broad experience in hepatobiliary medicine, ERCP and interventional endoscopy.
