Conversations about Suicide - Mental Health First Aid Training
Introduction
The Conversations about Suicide course teaches participants how to provide initial support to someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
Course participants learn how to recognise and respond to suicidal thoughts and behaviours, provide support and encourage pathways to professional help.
Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional help or other supports.
Content
Participants in this course will learn how to apply mental health first aid to a person experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
Structure
This half-day course is delivered face-to-face by an MHFA trained and Licensed Instructor. Price includes MHFA Conversations about Suicide manual and morning tea.
Facilitator - Natalie Bottroff
Accredited Instructor MHFA
Founder | Principal Consultant
GradDipRehabCouns
PTSD, ACT, Trauma Informed trained
Natalie has successfully completed Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for over 1,400 police officers and senior public servants ranging from sergeants and chief superintendents to diversity and inclusion officers. Training has also been delivered to more than 500+ individuals in government agencies and private organisations including child protection, manufacturing, local councils, insurance, mining, not-for-profit organisations and amateur sporting associations. Skilled at connecting with young people, Natalie is also qualified to deliver Teen MHFA to secondary students, engaging them in learning how to provide mental health first aid to their friends, as well as Youth MHFA, teaching others how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Natalie’s passion for mental health drives her to advocate for better conversations about mental health – conversations that are as simple as those about a person’s physical health. Reducing the stigma that some people with mental illness face requires acceptance and understanding that mental illness is a health condition like any other and that people living with mental illness should be respected and accepted just like everyone else. The desire to see better education in this sphere comes from Natalie’s work as a consultant, working with organisations that have people with psychological injuries and illnesses because of their employment. These conditions range from mild through to catastrophic. Natalie is involved in all aspects of returning work-injured employees to their usual occupation or new employment. Natalie’s firm provides personal injury consulting in life insurance, workers compensation and early intervention for non-insurance claims, together with training in mental health and pain education.
Important note - The course is not recommended for people seeking treatment or recovering from a mental health problem. Course content can affect some people who have or are experiencing a mental health problem. View full booking terms and conditions here.
