Tony Costello was appointed Professor & Director, Department of Urology at The Royal Melbourne in 2003. He was trained in surgery in Melbourne and then subsequently had fellowship training at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Hospital and the London Hospital in the University of London. His current interest is in the development of drug treatment for prostate cancer and in clinical application of robotics in prostate cancer surgery. He heads the largest robotic surgery program in Australia and was one of four urologists invited to teach the technique of robotic prostatectomy for prostate cancer surgery at the American Association of Urological Surgery Annual General Meeting. He was elected to membership of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons in 2004. This is an international association of urologists, 50 American and Canadian and 25 internationals who have shown outstanding leadership in the field of urology. He is also an invited member of the International Advisory Board of the Cleveland Clinic Urological Department. He has over 175 peer reviewed published articles and 15 book chapters and continues to innovate and lead initiatives in genito-urinary cancer research at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He was appointed Executive Director of the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre in 2009, the first such centre in Australia, established with a $15 million Federal Government grant.

David Jayne is Professor of Surgery at the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He trained in the UK with periods abroad at The Royal Perth Hospital, Australia, and Singapore General Hospital, Singapore. His clinical interests include laparoscopic and robotic surgery, with a focus on rectal cancer. His research interests include the development, application, and evaluation of new surgical technologies. He is Chief Investigator for several UK NIHR portfolio clinical trials, including ROLARR (robotic versus laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer), FIAT (fistula plug versus surgeons preference for fistula-in-ano), GLiSten (next generation fluorescence lymph node staging for stratified colon cancer surgery), and Fenix (Magnetic anal sphincter versus sacral nerve modulation for adult faecal incontinence). He is Clinical Director for an NIHR Healthcare Technologies Cooperative, a national network to generate novel solutions to unmet clinical need in colorectal disease.

Professor Mihir M. Desai is Professor of Urology and Director of the Center for Robotics at the USC Institute of Urology at the University of Southern California. Professor Desai was previously Director of the Center of Endourology at the Cleveland Clinic. Professor Desai’s field of expertise includes robotic and laparoscopic oncology and new technologies.

Professor Desai is an internationally renowned expert in the field of robotic oncologic surgery. He has made pioneering contributions in the fields of robotic radical cystectomy and intracorporeal urinary diversion. He has led the effort at USC to standardize the completely intracorporeal technique of urinary diversion including orthotopic neobladder and ileal conduit procedures. He has also made significant innovations in robotic partial nephrectomy, robotic surgery for advanced renal cell carcinoma including caval thrombectomy and robotic surgery for high-risk prostate cancers. Professor Desai’s pioneering work in developing novel technology includes novel flexible robotic platforms, natural orifice surgery (NOTES) and single-port (scarless “belly-button”) laparoscopic surgery for various urologic conditions. Professor Desai has won a total of 35 awards pertaining to his innovation and research including the prestigious Arthur Award conferred by the Endourologic Society in 2012, Endourology Society Essay Contest (2001-2003), and American Urological Association Video Awards (2001-2009). Professor Desai has published over 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed literature with an H-index of 37.

Professor Desai serves Associate Editor of Urology and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Endourology. He is co-editor of the recently launched VideoUrology Section of the Journal of Endourology. Professor Desai has been invited visiting Professor to many Institutions and Societies world-wide.

Position: Cardiothoracic Surgeon

MBBS, FRACS

Mr Barnett’s primary interest is thoracic surgical oncology, including the management of lung, oesophageal and thymic malignancy. He is experienced in laparoscopic, thoracoscopic and endobronchial ultrasound staging and resection of thoracic malignancy.

He gained proficiency in robotically assisted lobectomy and mediastinal lymph node dissection as a clinical fellow in thoracic surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, NY, NY. More recently, together with Assoc. Prof. Gavin Wright, he has established a robotic thoracic surgery program at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center, and Epworth Health Care, focusing on mediastinal tumours.

He is a Senior Lecturer, in The University of Melbourne Department of Surgery, Austin Hospital, and is appointed as a consultant thoracic surgeon at Austin Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Center and the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Suren Krishnan is Clinical Associate Professor of the University of Adelaide and Chairman, Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia.

He is a graduate of the University of Adelaide Medical School and trained in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was a fellow at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford United Kingdom in 1994.

He specialises in Head and Neck Oncology and has a special interest in Transoral Laser Microsurgery and Transoral Robotic Surgery.

Position: Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Mr Aubrey Almeida graduated MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 1986 and two years later undertook four years of military services with the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. He completed his cardiothoracic training in 1999, training at the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, whereupon he undertook a graduate Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He commenced practice in 2001 as a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon and is a member of the senior medical staff at Monash Medical Centre and Epworth HealthCare. Aubrey is a member of the team that pioneered robotic surgery in Australia.

Aubrey is the Vice President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons and a Deputy Director of the Epworth Cardiac Sciences Clinical Institute. He is an examiner for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. He has interests in valvular heart disease, minimally invasive surgery, adult congenital heart disease and surgical education.

Position: Head of Unit, Urogynaecology and Gynaecology 3 Units

Dr Marcus Carey is a urogynaecologist based in Melbourne, Australia.

Marcus is the Head of Unit for both the Urogynaecology and Gynaecology 3 units at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne. Marcus undertakes private urogynaecology practice at Frances Perry House, Melbourne.

Marcus is most interested in research focusing on improving surgical (vaginal, laparoscopic and robotic) and conservative methods for treating pelvic organ prolapse. Marcus has spent time operating and teaching in Ethiopia and Nepal, and is currently developing a non-surgical prolapse management program for low-resource settings.

A/Prof Declan Murphy is a Urologist & Director of Robotic Surgery, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Melbourne

Declan is a uro-oncologist with a particular interest in prostate cancer and minimally-invasive surgery. He holds senior editorial roles in the major urology journals worldwide including the British Journal of Urology International where he is Associate Editor for Social Media.

Associate Professor Laurence Harewood trained in General Surgery and Urology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.

Laurence was a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery in urology in Australia, carrying out the first laparoscopic nephrectomy in Australia at the Freemasons Hospital in 1993. He has researched and published on minimally invasive therapy for BPH. He has been a well known proponent of robotic surgery for the prostate and kidney, commencing with Robotic Radical Prostatectomy for Carcinoma of the Prostate at the Epworth Eastern Hospital in 2005. He has been the Head of Unit of Urology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, President of the World Congress of Endourology and a Board Member of the Freemasons Hospital. He was appointed Clinical Associate Professor in Urology in the Department of Surgery of the University of Melbourne in 2008. He is the Director of the Urology and Vascular Clinical Institute at Epworth. He ceased clinical work in 2021, but continues in his role at Epworth, provides medico-legal opinions and is carrying out a clinical research project on PSMA PET scans in prostate cancer in conjunction with the Whitten Foundation at Epworth. He provides a consulting service for NanoKnife focal treatment of prostate cancer.

Mr Dennis King is a Urologic Surgeon trained in all aspects of urology with a special interest in Prostate Cancer and Robotic Surgery, Kidney Cancer, Laparoscopic Renal surgery, Renal transplantation and General Urological conditions.

Mr King has extensive experience in prostate and kidney cancer with over 600 cases of da Vinci Robotic and Laparoscopic surgery for these conditions.

Geoff Coughlin is a Urologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and a visiting medical practitioner at the Wesley Hospital. He commenced the robotic surgery programs at these hospitals in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Dr Coughlin has an interest in robotic surgery and prostate cancer and is currently involved in clinical trials within these disciplines.

Dr Manolitsas graduated from Monash University in 1987.

He completed Gynaecological Oncology training at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth and at the James Cancer Center, Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, Ohio, USA.

He has undertaken laboratory based research in molecular genetics of ovarian cancer at the University of Southampton (UK) and was awarded MD in 1999

He is currently working as Gynaecological Oncologist at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, and in Private Practice at Epworth Eastern Hospital and Cabrini Hospital.

He is currently a member and past Secretary (2006-2011) of the Australian Society of Gynaecologic Oncologists , member of the Australian and New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group, and member of the International Society of Gynaecological Cancer.

He was the first gynaecologist in Australia to embrace robotic surgery, undertaking the first robotic surgery for endometrial cancer in 2007 and has now completed more than 350 robotic cases.

He has spoken at national and international meetings and facilitated workshops on robotic gynaecological surgery in Australia and USA. He was invited faculty for the World Robotic Gynecology Congress IV and the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy Meeting in Florida 2012.

He was the first gynaecologist in Australia to be accredited as a robotic surgical proctor, and is still actively involved in proctoring gynaecologists and gynaecological oncologists who are learning robotic surgery.

Associate Professor Jobling is Director of Gynaecologic Oncology at Monash Medical Centre. He graduated from Monash University in 1980 and did his post graduate sub specialist training in Gynaecologic Oncology in London at the Royal Marsden and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals. He has subsequently been elected as a Member of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons and is also Founder of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (1999). He is Chairman of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation Board. His major interests are in radical surgery for ovarian cancer and the application of robotic surgery for gynaecological malignancy.

Associate Professor Jobling is an active member of a Research Team in bio marker detection and proteomics in ovarian cancer. He is involved as a collaborative investigator on a number of international Clinical Trials, and is a Member of the Australia and New Zealand Gynaecologic Oncology Group, the Australian Society of Gynaecologic Oncology, the Victorian Co-operative Oncology Group and the International Society of Gynaecological Cancer.

Position: Colorectal Surgeon

Craig Lynch is a colorectal surgeon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. He completed his General Surgical Fellowship in New Zealand, with post-fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, and St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne. He holds a Masters degree in surgery and has published over 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is a Fellow of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and International Fellow of the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons.

He has extensive minimally invasive surgical experience with both laparoscopic and robotic surgery, being the first to perform robotic colorectal surgery in Australasia in 2009. While his current clinical practice also includes the management of patients with advanced pelvic cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis, he tries to find the time to fit in as many robotic procedures as possible.

Dr Stephen Bell is a colorectal surgeon at the Alfred Hospital and Cabrini Hospital in Melbourne, and is a member of the Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery of Australia and New Zealand. He is active in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic, robotic and trans-anal procedures. He is also actively involved in research and training in these areas. He has been involved in the introduction of taTME and robotic colorectal surgery in Australia and New Zealand, having conducted numerous surgical workshops in these areas.
