RUTHERFORD, Tony - 02032015.jpg Organisation: Leeds Centre for Reproductive Medicine Leeds, UK Position: Consultant in Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Surgery Tony Rutherford qualified in Medicine in 1980, attending St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, University of London. He held postgraduate training posts in London, Leeds and Hull. His main career interests developed working in reproductive medicine under the guidance of Professor Robert Winston at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, and in minimal access gynaecological surgery under the supervision of Alan Gordon in Hull. During this training period, he was one of the first to introduce transvaginal ultrasound and the use of analogue IVF stimulation regimens in the UK, which radically changed iVF practice. He was also one of the founder members of the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy. Mr Rutherford was appointed as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist in 1991, setting up the Leeds General Infirmary's Reproductive Medicine Unit. He also introduced minimal access day-case gynaecological surgery in Leeds, and currently provides a regional service for managing endometriosis. He has been actively involved in reproductive medicine both nationally and internationally over the last 25 years. He acted as a clinical inspector for the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) from 1995 to 2002. He was the Gynaecologist on the Guideline Development Committee that prepared the original NICE Guidelines on the management and assessment of Fertility in 2004. He has served in numerous roles for over 17 years on the committee of the British Fertility Society, culminating as Chair of the Society from 2009-2012. He represented the UK on the International Federation of Fertility Societies Executive and Scientific Committees for 6 years, and more recently as a member of the European Assisted Conception Consortium, and the International Advisory Board of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. He has worked closely with the Department of Health, and provided the principle clinical lead for the 18 week Care Pathway for Fertility that eliminated long waiting times for IVF treatments in the UK, and the Map of Medicine for Fertility, which provides web based national guidance for all medical practitioners on investigating and managing fertility. He has continued to work with NICE as a member of the NICE Evidence Review Advisory Committee for Fertility, and recently was appointed by the Department of Health as the Clinical Member of the HFEA. He is also on the Editorial Board of Human Fertility. Mr Rutherford has played an important role in general education of the next generation of gynaecologists from 2004 to 2010 as a member, and later chair, of the MRCOG Part II examination committee, and a member of the RCOG Education and Assessment Committee. He has also played an important role as a patient advocate, as an active member of the National Infertility Awareness Committee from 2005 to 2013. Mr Rutherford has played a key role in the development of new clinical strategies in reproductive medicine and has published over 94 peer reviewed articles and papers, including numerous book chapters. He has held £2.5 million of grants for academic research since his appointment in Leeds. Highlights include his team winning the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology prize for Junior Researcher of the year, and two first prizes with the American Society of Reproductive Medicine in 1996 and 1998 for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Knowledge for the members of the ASRM. He has lectured widely both nationally and internationally over the last 25 years. He also has a position at the University of Melbourne and particular past research interests and publications have been in fertility-sparing options in endometrial cancer and accurate proteinuria diagnosis in pre-eclampsia. Tom’s collaborations and findings from recent albuminuria research (rather than the more generic proteinuria) was recently presented at the Australian Association of Clinical Biochemists and there is much laboratory interest in furthering the research with a view to replacing existing testing. As a founder of Jean Hailes, it has been important to Elizabeth to continue Jean Hailes' legacy. She believes the power of Jean Hailes for Women's Health is its multidisciplinary structure. Elizabeth worked at Queen Victoria Hospital and Prince Henry's Hospital, which merged in 1987 to form the Monash Medical Centre. There, she was appointed Head of the Menopause Unit. Elizabeth served patients for more than 30 years across the three organisations. She now consults at the Jean Hailes Medical Centres in East Melbourne and Clayton, and also at a monthly clinic at the Foster and Toora Medical Centre, Foster. Elizabeth enjoys being a role model for younger professional women, encouraging them to find a passion in their work and provide healthcare and education for our community. She finds working with women a profound privilege. Elizabeth visits Mongolia each year with a multidisciplinary group of health professionals to teach, give lectures and provide clinical services, including surgery. The group has established a fellowship funded by Epworth Freemasons to bring two doctors from Mongolia to Australia for three months each year. Jean Hailes for Women's Health provides clinical attachments across our disciplines. In 2018 Elizabeth was appointed Visiting Professor, Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences.

Dr Hodges completed his OBGYN training at Monash Medical Centre and PhD in fetal medicine under Professor Euan Wallace at Monash University. He worked as a postdoctoral research and clinical MFM fellow with Professor Jan Deprest in Leuven, Belgium, and then undertook formal maternal fetal medicine subspecialty training through the University of Toronto at Mount Sinai Hospital with Professor John Kingdom and Professor Greg Ryan. He now leads perinatal services at Monash Health and is a member of the Victorian Fetal Therapy Service. His research interests include translational fetal therapy, cellular therapy for fetal lung disorders and intrapartum care.
