Dr Simon Reilly is the Chair of Epworth Anaesthetic Advisory Committee and past Chair of Anaesthetic Services. Simon works full time in private practice in Anaesthesia. He has interests in developing improved post-surgical analgesia pathways and enhanced recovery of patients. He is involved with the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and is on the Professional Issues in Anaesthesia Committee (PIAC). He is also involved in overseas aid work with Interplast.

Position: Intensive Care Specialist

Con is an intensive care specialist at Epworth Richmond. He is currently a Fellow of both The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the College of Intensive Care Medicine. He has served as Director of Critical Care Medicine at Epworth Eastern, a Senior Intensivist at Epworth Richmond, and practised Perioperative Medicine at Epworth Richmond and Eastern private hospitals.

He has also taught both at an undergraduate and postgraduate level for many years.

Associate Professor, Clinical Dean, Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School, The University of Melbourne.

Specialist training in Intensive Care, Internal Medicine and Anaesthesia.

Board member of Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine since 2002 (and now College of Intensive Care Medicine since 2010). Chair of Assessment Committee, previous Chair of Education Committee and Chair of Examinations.
Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society representative on the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).

Chairman of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC), representative on the International Liaison Committee On Resuscitation (since 1998), and immediate past chair of the Advanced Life Support Committee. Active involvement since 1998 in the development of the international evidence based guidelines. Editorial Board member and Evidence Evaluation Expert for the ILCOR international consensus process for resuscitation science 2005, 2010 and 2015.

Author or co-author of over 150 journal articles and book chapters.

Position: Anaesthetist

Peter’s interests include in Cardiac anaesthesia, Postoperative analgesia, Orthopaedics and supporting research.

He has been involved in the development of an Acute Pain service, Echocardiography teaching, Medical student teaching and has held appointments at the University of Melbourne in Research and teaching. Having worked in Public and University practice he is currently in full time private practice.

Position: Respiratory and Sleep Disorders Specialist

Dr Michelle Caldecott graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1993 and then went on to complete her specialist training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne.

Michelle has around 20 years’ experience in treating respiratory and sleep disorders in both the public and private sectors. Her private practice is based at the Epworth Hospital in Richmond, where she utilises the sleep laboratories and also performs flexible bronchoscopy.

Michelle is joint Director of Melbourne Lung and Sleep Specialists, incorporating the Epworth lung function laboratory. She also holds senior staff specialist positions at Austin Health and with the Victorian Respiratory Support Service (VRSS). Michelle has also recently been appointed Director of the Internal Medicine Clinical Institute across Epworth sites.

Whilst involving herself in the development of organisational frameworks focussing on patient advocacy, clinical governance and peer review, Michelle maintains a strong clinical focus, which places her in an ideal position to present this workshop.

Position: Cardiologist

Hendrik is a cardiologist with a special interest in heart failure management. Hendrik graduated from the University of Melbourne, undertook physician training at Royal Melbourne Hospital, and then advanced training in General Medicine at the Alfred, followed by Cardiology advanced training at Epworth Richmond and Flinders Medical Centre. In 2011, Hendrik did Fellowship training in Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at The Alfred.

Hendrik's clinical interests include management of refractory heart failure; acute decompensated heart failure; the role of device therapy in heart failure treatment; use of inotropic support in specific heart failure settings; pulmonary hypertension; and cardiac amyloidosis.

Position: Geriatrician

Dr Mutlu Haksoz is a Geriatrician who works in Epworth Richmond and Freemasons.

He did his training through the University of Melbourne, followed by periods in Austin Health, St Georges Hospital and Monash Health.

He is mainly involved with the acute care of the elderly, including peri-operative care. Other interests include dementia and problem behaviours and poly-pharmacy.

Position: Anaesthetist

Lecturer, Ultrasound Education Group, Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne, Consultant Anaesthetist, Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Monash Medical Centre

David Canty is a specialist cardiothoracic anaesthetist with an academic interest in echocardiography and lung ultrasound. He has completed a Doctorate of Philosophy thesis in "The impact of focused transthoracic echocardiography in anaesthesia and non-cardiac surgery". His areas of interest in cardiac anaesthesia include perioperative echocardiography, lung ultrasound and myocardial protection with cardioplegic arrest.

Position: Cardiologist and Director, Cardiac Sciences Clinical Institute

Associate Professor Ron Dick is the Director of Cardiac Services Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare and the former Chair of Epworth’s Group Medical Advisory Council.


His specialties and interests include interventional cardiology, management of acute coronary syndrome including myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, clinical research and medical education.

Position: Antimicrobial Stewardship Team

Associate Professor Marshall is an infectious diseases physician at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Principal Research Fellow at the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne. Her research and clinical interests include antimicrobial stewardship and infection control and hospital epidemiology.

Amongst her other roles, she is a member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Team at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and is chief investigator on an NH&MRC Project Partnership grant investigating antimicrobial stewardship in the private hospital sector. As well as Head of the Infection Prevention and Surveillance Service at Melbourne Health.

Position: Antimicrobial Stewardship Team

Dr Doyle is an infectious diseases physician with clinical appointments at the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals. He is also an NHMRC research fellow at the Burnet Institute and University of Melbourne investigating infectious diseases epidemiology. He has practical experience in antimicrobial stewardship as a member of the AMS team at the Alfred for the last three years.

Position: Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist

An experienced clinical pharmacist working full time with the Slade / Epworth AMS Team. This includes monitoring antimicrobial use, conducting point prevalence surveys and participation in stewardship ward rounds.

He has experience working with surgical / transplant populations, and the use of antimicrobials in complex patients (immunosuppressed, renal / hepatic / intestinal failure).

Position: Specialist General and Trauma Surgeon and Endoscopist

A/Prof. Danne’s training was at the University of Melbourne and St Vincents Hospital. Following this a Post-Graduate Trauma Surgical Fellowship was completed in Washington DC, and further surgical training in the United Kingdom in both upper GI and colorectal surgery and endoscopy.

Following this, fourteen years were well spent in Albury-Wodonga as a Regional and Trauma Surgeon in Private Practice and VMO at the Albury Base Hospital. A/Prof Danne was also greatly involved in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in developing, establishing and directing educational programmes (EMST – Early Management of Severe Trauma and DSTC – Definitive Surgical Trauma Care) courses. He lead a research group investigating major trauma outcomes. This formed the academic basis of an M.D. Thesis, and a practical outcome of contributing significantly to the establishment of the Victorian State Trauma System in 1998. Professor Danne was chairman of the RACS Trauma Committee from 1999 to 2004 and the Victorian State Committee from 1998 to 2000.

A/Prof. Danne was invited to establish the Trauma Surgical Service at Royal Melbourne Hospital (one of two major trauma services in Melbourne), which he undertook between 1998 and 2003, and during this time was also a Consultant in the Colorectal Surgical Unit, (1998-2008). In 2003 he decided to return to a combination of private practice and VMO surgical work, and been based at Epworth Hospital Richmond. He has been regularly involved in acute general surgical management as a consultant for more than 30 years.

Position: Antimicrobial Stewardship Team

Dr Peel is an infectious diseases physician with current appointments at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, University of Melbourne and Mayo Clinic, USA. Trisha is an academic clinician with particular interest in surgical site infections, in addition to AMS. She currently holds an NHMRC fellowship investigating risk prediction and prevention of prosthetic joint infections. In addition, she is appointed as an honorary orthopaedic fellow, working closely with the Orthopaedic Department, SVHM.
