Welcome
Help to design systems of care for before, during and after surgery that deliver timely access to safe and high-quality surgical care while still achieving the best outcomes at sustainable costs.
Facilitated by Dr Norman Swan - this is an interactive summit, with audience participation a major part of the program.
Key outcomes include:
- Exchange thoughts and breakdown barriers to addressing post operative complications in Australia.
- Share views on priorities and means to deliver high value care to enhance patient outcomes and health services sustainability.
- Discuss concepts and champion solutions that revolutionise patient care.
- Identify specific projects of high priority and examine how these can be rapidly progressed.
This summit is an invaluable opportunity for health leaders, private and public hospital executives, surgeons, clinicians, allied health professionals, academics and researchers to collaboratively discuss concepts and champion solutions that revolutionise patient care.
Summit registration includes free access to the Advanced Recovery Room Care Workshop at the Royal Adelaide Hospital on 13 July 2023.

THE CHALLENGE
The Hidden Pandemic of Postoperative Complications relates to an inexorable increase in the risk of complications after surgery as a result of an ageing population with more frequent chronic diseases.
It has been estimated this will result in an increase in complications and cost of more than 10% annually out to at least 2034. This will rapidly make surgical care inaccessible to more and more of our population unless addressed urgently.
MEETING THE CHALLENGE
SUMMIT I AND A SET OF PRINCIPLES TO GUIDE HIGH VALUE CARE
There is emerging evidence that changes in healthcare delivery before, during and after surgery can generate high value care, with improved patient outcomes and greater sustainability of services through reduced costs.
In 2020 the first Summit was held, which was attended by 85 key experts from around Australia and New Zealand, with invited guests from the USA and the UK.
Opened by the Hon Greg Hunt and the Hon Stephen Wade, the Federal and SA Health Ministers, and facilitated by Dr Norman Swan the summit produced a set of Principles to guide high value care, and to identify priority areas.

SUMMIT II - TURNING PRINCIPLES INTO PRACTICE
A follow up meeting has been delayed due to Covid, and we are aware significant activity to deliver high value care exists in a number of jurisdictions.
It is timely to now hold Summit II to re-visit the challenges and Principles generated, to share views on high priority solutions, and to explore how these might be best progressed in a coordinated manner.
Summit II will be held on 14 - 15 July 2023 at the National Wine Centre, Adelaide.
