Dr Meagan Costedio, M.D, F.A.S.C.R.S, F.A.C.S is a Staff Member in the Department for Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. Dr. Costedio was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Her specialty interests include, minimally invasive colon surgery including single port, robotics, transanal TME and TEM.  She specializes in colon and rectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and transitional care of pediatric patients.

Dr. Costedio earned her medical degree from University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington Vermont, and stayed to complete internship and general surgery residency at Fletcher Allen Healthcare - University of Vermont. She also completed a colon and rectal surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

She is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery, and is a fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and American College of Surgeons.

Position: (Past) Director of Colorectal Surgery

Andrew is Associate Professor of Colorectal Surgery and recent Director of Colorectal Surgery at Royal Brisbane Hospital, Australia.  Andrew is also the immediate past Chair of the Australia and New Zealand Training Board in Colorectal Surgery.  Along with the team in Brisbane, Andrew has conducted over 150 workshops on minimally invasive techniques and more recently, has been conducting courses internationally on transanal TME, ventral rectopexy and robotics.  His main interests involve minimally invasive colorectal surgery utilising laparoscopic, endoscopic and robotic technologies, focusing on treatment of rectal cancer and functional pelvic floor disorders. Andrew is the principal investigator and lead author for the large multicentre trial of laparoscopic versus open surgery for rectal cancer (ALaCaRT).

Position: Colorectal Surgeon

Dr Stephen Bell is a colorectal surgeon at the Alfred Hospital and Cabrini Hospital in Melbourne, and is a member of the Training Board in Colon and Rectal Surgery of Australia and New Zealand. He is active in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, including laparoscopic, robotic and trans-anal procedures. He is also actively involved in research and training in these areas. He has been involved in the introduction of taTME and robotic colorectal surgery in Australia and New Zealand, having conducted numerous surgical workshops in these areas.

Position: Chief Medical Officer, Executive Director and Medical Services

Associate Professor Gregor Brown is a physician gastroenterologist and Head of Endoscopy at The Alfred Hospital Melbourne.  He is chair-elect of the Conjoint Committee for the Certification of Training in GI Endoscopy, sits on the Clinical Advisory Group to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, and led the review of the ‘Advances in Colonoscopy’ chapter of the current Australian Surveillance Colonoscopy Guidelines.  He is a past chair of the Australian GI Endoscopy Association, and remains active in the National Endoscopy Training Initiative.  After completing a PhD in Adelaide he spent a year at St Marks Hospital, London, as Endoscopy Fellow.  His main clinical interests are luminal gastroenterology and endoscopy including therapeutic gastroscopy/colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy. 

He is committed to training and research in colonoscopy technique and advanced polypectomy techniques, as well as coeliac disease, bowel preparation, capsule endoscopy, and device-assisted enteroscopy.

Mr Andrew Bui is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Austin Health, The Northern Hospital and Epworth Healthcare and the Director of Colorectal Training Programme at Austin Health.

After graduating from the University of Melbourne with MBBS and MSc., Mr Bui undertook initial medical and surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, followed by training in General Surgical in Melbourne, Tasmania and Scotland.

He undertook post fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery in the UK, at Canterbury Hospital and then St. Mark’s Hospital for Diseases of the Colon and Rectum in London. This was followed by further period of training in America through clinical attachment at- Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Minneapolis Colorectal Centre and Memorial Sloan Kittering Cancer Centre.

He returned to Melbourne in 1996 to Consultant positions at the Austin Hospital and commenced private practice at Epworth.

In addition to clinical practice in public and private hospitals, Mr Bui is also active in teaching and training programme. He is currently the Director Colorectal Training in Austin Health and previously supervisor of General Surgical Training.

He also has clinical research interests in the management of and outcomes for patients with colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, and minimally invasive colorectal surgery.

Mr Bui is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and NZ, of the Section of Colorectal Surgery, European Society of Coloproctology.

Position: Colorectal Surgeon

Mr Raaj Chandra is a Melbourne-based Colorectal Surgeon specialising in advanced laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as general colorectal conditions. He has appointments at The Royal Melbourne, Box Hill and Epworth Eastern Hospitals.

Mr Chandra is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ). He is committed to Surgical Education and Training having recently completed the requirements for a Masters of Surgical Education degree at Imperial College London.

Position: Histopathologist

MBBS, B.Sc (Hons), FRCPA

Dr John Ciciulla graduated B.Sc (Hons) in 2000 and MBBS in 2004, both from the University of Melbourne. He conducted microarray breast cancer research at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Murdoch Children's Research Institute.

Dr Ciciulla trained as a Registrar in Anatomical Pathology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and consulted at the Alfred Hospital, Bendigo Hospital and at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Pathology at the University of Melbourne and an Associate Investigator at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute(WEHI).

Dr Ciciulla commenced at Melbourne Pathology in 2015. He has interests in gastrointestinal/pancreatobiliary, head and neck and neoplastic skin pathology.

Position: Director, General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Institute

Associate Professor Gary Crosthwaite is the Director of the General Surgery and Gastroenterology Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare.

As an Upper GI Surgeon with extensive experience in surgical oncology and laparoscopic surgery including oesophagogastrectomy, hiatus hernia repair, achalasia surgery and hernia surgery, he has a keen interest in evolving surgical techniques and developments.

He also has significant experience of PEOM for Achalasia and currently undertakes this procedure at Epworth.

Dr Rowan Doig

 

MBBS, PhD, FRACP

Dr Rowan Doig is a medical oncologist with appointments at Box Hill Hospital and Epworth HealthCare and is a Senior Lecturer at Monash University. He graduated from Melbourne University in 1983 and completed his PhD in 1995. Rowan has a keen interest in colorectal and upper gastrointestinal tumours as well as breast cancer and prostate cancer. He has been a co-investigator in multiple clinical trials in the area of colorectal cancer and is involved in post graduate and undergraduate education.

Professor Glenn Guest leads Epworth Geelong’s surgical teaching, research and program development; promoting the School of Medicine and Epworth Geelong to academic and professional communities in Australia and internationally. A joint appointment with the Faculty of Health at Deakin University and Epworth HealthCare, this role provides academic, clinical and research leadership in the discipline of surgery within the School of Medicine at Deakin University and at Epworth Geelong. Glenn also plays a pivotal role in clinical leadership in surgical practice at Epworth Geelong, including supervision of surgical trainees and other junior medical staff, establishment of on call rosters and participation in audit, quality assurance and national/state registries.

Position: Colorectal Surgeon

Professor Heriot is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and is the director of Cancer Surgery at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. He qualified from Cambridge University and completed general surgery training in the UK. He has undertaken colorectal fellowships at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne, St Mark’s Hospital, London, and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He completed a research doctorate at the University of London on rectal cancer and an MBA at Melbourne Business School.

He has a clinical focus on lower gastrointestinal oncology and has developed the Pelvic Exenteration service and the Peritoneal disease service at Peter Mac. He also has a focus on minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer.

Professor Heriot is a Clinical Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and was awarded the John Mitchell Crouch fellowship by RACS for 2016. He was previously Chairman of the Research Support Committee for the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) and is a member of the Australasian Training Board in Colorectal Surgery (TBCRS). He is the Chairman of the Binational Colorectal Cancer Audit.

He has published over 150 peer reviewed papers, multiple book chapters and 1 book. He is on the editorial advisory board for Disease of the Colon and Rectum, Colorectal Disease, and Colorectal Cancer. He runs a translational research program focusing on lower gastrointestinal oncology and is currently supervising 8 surgeons undertaking higher degrees.

Position: General and Colorectal Surgeon

Mr Ian Hastie is a colorectal surgeon with expertise in bowel cancer and surgical oncology. His areas of interest include: inflammatory bowel disease, benign and malignant disease of the pelvis, complex fistula disease and faecal incontinence. Following Fellowship in Oxford, UK Mr Hastie is a pioneer in minimally invasive colorectal surgery with extensive experience in laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He is credentialed in advanced endoscopy including colonoscopy and gastroscopy.

Mr Hastie is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Gastroenterology Clinical Institute at Epworth HealthCare. He has been an invited speaker at both international and local conferences. Mr Hastie has been involved in the training of colorectal surgeons, Registrars, Residents and medical students for over 15 years at both the Epworth and Royal Melbourne Hospitals.

Mr James Keck is a busy colorectal surgeon working in public & private practice in Melbourne. He trained in colorectal surgery in Melbourne & Adelaide and also overseas at Colchester, UK and at the Lahey Clinic in Boston USA. Mr Keck is Clinical Director of Colorectal Surgery at Eastern health in Victoria as well as a visiting colorectal surgeon at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. His private practice is divided between St. Vincent’s Private and Epworth Eastern in Box Hill. He is President of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand.

James is married with three children and outside of medicine his interests include basketball (player, coach & administrator), literature and cryptic crosswords.

Dr Angus Lee is the current Colorectal Fellow at the Epworth HealthCare. He is undertaking a higher degree (Master of Surgery) with focus on preoperative strategies in optimising patients undergoing colorectal surgery. He will be travelling to USA for a clinical fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in 2018.

Position: Colorectal Surgeon

Craig Lynch is a colorectal surgeon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. He completed his General Surgical Fellowship in New Zealand, with post-fellowship training in Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, and St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne. He holds a Masters degree in surgery and has published over 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is a Fellow of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and International Fellow of the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons.

He has extensive minimally invasive surgical experience with both laparoscopic and robotic surgery, being the first to perform robotic colorectal surgery in Australasia in 2009. While his current clinical practice also includes the management of patients with advanced pelvic cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis, he tries to find the time to fit in as many robotic procedures as possible.

Jacob McCormick is a colorectal surgeon who is experienced in all areas of colorectal surgery. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive management, as well as extended surgery for locally advanced and recurrent rectal and pelvic cancers; an area in which he is currently completing a Master's Degree. Other areas of interest include advanced colonoscopy and peritioneal disease, including cytoreduction and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy, as well as perianal conditions.

Position: Nuclear Medicine Physician

Dr Aurora Poon completed her medical degree at the University of Melbourne and completed Physician training in Nuclear Medicine at the Austin Hospital and Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

She returned to the Austin Hospital as a Nuclear Medicine physician after completing physician training in 2001.  Currently involved in protocol evaluation and implementation at the Austin Hospital and research in prospective study of whole body FDG PET/CT in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica.

Co-author of a book chapter ( Ell & Gambhir Nuclear Medicine in Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment)

Co-authour of> 30 journal articles.

Associate Professor Luis Prado MBBS FRACMA FRACGP FACHE FCHSM FAAQHC FISQua FACMQ Grad Dip Sp Med, is the Executive Director Academic and Medical Services and Chief Medical Officer of Epworth HealthCare. He is a specialist in medical administration and clinical governance, and a censor and board director of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators. He is also a practicing specialist general practitioner with a special interest in sports medicine.

A/Professor Prado is the first Australian to hold Fellowships, by examination, of both the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Medical Quality. He also holds Fellowships of the Australian College of Health Service Management, the Australian Association of Quality in Health care and the International Society of Quality in Healthcare.

Andrew is a specialist radiation oncologist who has expertise in the management of urological, breast, gastrointestinal, skin and general oncology and is a credentialed prostate brachytherapist. He is trained in stereotactic radiosurgery locally and internationally with a number of research initiatives exploring the merits of this advanced radiation technology.

Dr Philip Smart is a Specialist Colorectal surgeon. He studied Medicine at the University of Melbourne and Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School, graduating in 1999. He completed surgical training at Royal Melbourne Hospital, obtaining a Fellowship in General Surgery in 2009. He was appointed as a Visiting Medical Officer at Royal Melbourne, Royal Women's and Austin Health in General Surgery. He then completed 3 years of subspecialist training in Colon and Rectal surgery, including a Clinical Fellowship in 2013 at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in Ohio USA, one of the leading colorectal surgery units in the world. 

He completed a Doctor of Medical Science degree (D.Med.Sci) at the University of Melbourne under the supervision of Professor A.Heriot and A/Prof J.Mackay.  In addition, he holds a degree in Clinical Research Methods through Monash University.

He completed Robotic Surgery Training at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, and Methodist Hospital, Texas. 

He is currently the Head of Surgery at The Surgery Centre, Austin Health and holds public hospital appointments at both Austin and Eastern Health.

Dr Kevin So is a Radiation Oncologist at Epworth HealthCare, South West Regional Cancer Centre and Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service. After graduating from Monash University, he completed his specialty training in Radiation Oncology in 2015 through the William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre, Alfred Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute. ​

Position: Gastroenterologist

Dr Paul Urquhart is a Gastroenterologist with a particular interest in advanced endoscopy including EUS, ERCP and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of oesophageal and colonic dysplasia. As the Head of Endoscopy at Eastern Health he leads and coordinates the management of patients with advanced colonic polyps. He is involved in teaching colonoscopy and EMR to advanced trainees and actively participates in research in this area.

Position: Colorectal Surgeon

Mr Satish Warrier is a colorectal surgeon who works at Epworth Healthcare, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Alfred Hospitals. He is the current chair of the Victorian general surgical training board, and former chair of the Research working party. Apart from his obvious interest in locally advanced colorectal cancer and peritoneal cancers Satish has played an important role in the adoption of new technologies into Victoria. He leads the transanal TME program at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, is part of the Austrlaasian teaching faculty and proctorship group, and performed the first taTME and first robotic tatTME in Victoria.

Satish has also performed the first minimally invasive IORT in the world. He is a high volume robotic surgeon and has completed and proctored many colorectal and general surgical robotic procedures including hernias. He maintains a strong research interest and has published well over 60 peer reviewed publications and has presented widely.

Dr Allan Zimet is a medical oncologist with an interest in the treatment of gastrointestinal (colon, stomach, oesophageal and pancreatic) cancers, lung cancer, lymphoma, myeloma, breast cancer and central nervous tumours. He provides compassionate honest care with a patient focus, maintaining and improving quality of life. Allan also tutors medical students and teaches palliative care at the Austin and Epworth.
