Good afternoon Members,
I hope everyone kept safe and (relatively) dry during the torrential rain that battered Brisbane
in the last week. Fortunately, the sun has shown itself once again just in time for the weekend.
It is with sadness that I share with Members the recent passing of two well-known Members of the
Squadron: Life Member Ged Glancy and Long-Term Member Peter Byrne. Both of these men contributed significantly
to the Squadron and will be dearly missed by all. On behalf of the Squadron I extend our deepest sympathies
to the families of Ged and Peter during this difficult time. A chronicle of their accomplishments as well
as funeral details can be found further in the newsletter.
Well done to the 21 competitors
in the Moreton Bay Multihull Regatta held over the weekend. Despite two abandoned races due to the torrential
downpour, all enjoyed a solid few days of racing. Congratulations to the winners of each division.
Good luck to our Etchells sailors who are competing in the Brisbane Fleet Championships this weekend.
Also this weekend, the Squadron’s annual Family Easter Fun Day is taking place this Sunday from
10 a.m. We are glad to be able to host the event once again after unfortunately missing out last year
due to the global health crisis. We must not have been the only ones looking forward to the event as bookings
for the day will have the Club at capacity with over 400 people and one Easter Bunny attending.
The Squadron has received numerous captivating photos in response to the competition. After deliberation
from the selection committee, the deadline of the photo competition will be extended another few weeks
to allow even more fantastic photos to go in the draw. We will also be featuring a selection of great
photographs that have been submitted each week in the newsletter as you will see below. Whether they have
been selected to go on the side of the building or not, all of these photographs deserve to be appreciated
by our Members as they truly capture the unique and beautiful features of our Club, Sport, and our beautiful
home on Moreton Bay. Please submit all photos to Lynne at lynne@rqys.com.au.
Sunshine is
back after a lot of rain and we look forward to seeing you out on the Bay and around the Squadron this
weekend.

Vale - Ged Glancy & Peter Byrne
|
|
It brings us much sadness to
advise that two members have passed away recently.
Life Member Ged Glancy
Awarded Life Membership in 2016, Ged Glancy, 80 years young and a member for 60 years, was also a dedicated
sailor and active volunteer for over 35 years. Ged was a true sailor in every sense of the word until
an injury had prevented him from continuing to sail competitively. Nonetheless, Ged wanted to continue
his involvement in sailing. He became one of the Squadron’s leading volunteers and a favoured Ramp
Marshall. On most weekends, Ged would happily usher sailors to and from the ramp as well as promptly maintain
order in the storeroom from potentially messy hands and tangled ropes. The room is affectionately known
as “Ged’s Shed” for this reason. Ged had taught many volunteers the assortment of duties
and responsibilities required of them and how valuable being a volunteer was for both on-water and off-water
events. His guidance and wisdom, in turn, encouraged many others to enjoy volunteering, as he did. Ged
will be missed by many and it will be strange without him marshalling sailors on the ramp with a smile,
hearing his voice over the VHF, or ensuring that the buoy shed is kept clean and prepared for the next
sailing event, however we know he will be there in spirit. We send our deepest condolences out to Ged’
s wife Diane, son Michael and all the other members of his family through this difficult time.
Members are advised that the funeral service of Ged will be held at the Hemmant Cemetary Chapel
on Wednesday 31 March 2021 at 10:30 a.m.
Long-Term Member Peter Byrne
Peter Byrne, a proud Squadron member for over 39 years (joined in 1982) sadly passed away on Friday the
19th March. Additionally, Peter was a Queensland Director of the Marina Industries Association who brought
a wealth of knowledge not only as a boating customer, but as a valuable contributor in matters of finance,
marketing and promotion of the Industry. Peter was also supportive of the Club in many ways, introducing
many new members to the community over the years. Our sympathies go out to the entire Byrne family on
the sad loss of a long standing and treasured Squadron member.

The Squadron is excited to welcome
Vuly Play to the Club as a sponsor. Members may have noticed that the old, wooden children's playground
has been removed from the area adjacent to the BBQ area. In its place now stands a brand-new set of equipment
kindly provided by Vuly Play. Thanks to Vuly, many happy children are enjoying the new equipment as we
speak.
Brisbane-based company, Vuly Play, has been at the forefront
of outdoor play equipment for over a decade! Whilst offering a range of products from beach
trolleys to trampolines,
Vuly has pushed the limits of innovation, safety and fun!

27 - 28 March 2021
Quentin and Barbie (Lalapanzi) have a wonderful weekend planned
- and even the weather gods are looking promising with sunshine from today onward hopefully. The wind
on Sunday may swing to the north-west so the original destination of the Sandhills is being altered to
Canaipa for added protection.
An updated flyer is below - and as usual we will see you at
the monthly dinner and meeting (including the briefing) - come along to say “Hello” even if
you’re not cruising this weekend - we would love to see you all!

SCG Lord Howe Island Cruise
|
|
1 - 11 April 2021
The time is nearing for the cruising-in-company rally to Lord Howe
Island - with only 4 boats remaining out of the original “interested” list of 17. The
plan is to leave the Southport Seaway at the High Tide (either 11am or 11pm) on April Fools Day (what
could possibly go wrong?)
As a result of several members not being
able to go - there is some interest in an Easter Cruise - so if you are interested and would like to arrange
something informally - please come along on Friday and / or get in touch with Dean and Sally Johns who
are also interested to get out of the marina for at least some of the long weekend!

New Boat Wash Zones for Trailerboats
|
|
The Marina have installed two
hoses on the eastern side of the Trade Sheds for trailerboat hose downs and engine flushes. This has been
put in place to reduce the amount of traffic around the main ramp and dinghy hardstand. Users will also
find that the new area is well shaded in the afternoon.

Members of our community are
reminded to not park in trailer designated spaces in the public car park outside of the Squadron. The
Department of Transport and Main Roads have received a complaint relating to visitor parking in car/trailer
parks and may move to having parking inspectors visit the public carpark and potentially, issue fines.
Visitors may access the single car parks which are the marked blue zones only, Monday to Friday,
8am - 5pm (excluding school & public holidays).
