Fellow Members,
How could I start without singing the praises of all Members, Staff and Volunteers for the spectacular
event on Sunday - Canaipa 30. I haven’t seen the final figures, however more than 400 very happy,
inclusive and helpful people all pitched in to plan, prepare, execute and pack up the whole celebration.
Many thanks to you all for making this a most memorable occasion. All I have heard since the event is
“When can we do it again?” It seemed to be exactly what we all needed.
Thank you also to all those who have donated to the Canaipa Fund. We have had a flood of donations
- the Long House Museum is a reality, which will display our proud history for generations to come. We
still need more generous support to get this to completion, so please contact reception to arrange a tax
deductable donation. As an aside, the Squadron Rum has been favourably received by the discerning Members
- and is now available across the bar. Very few of the commemorative Bottles, hand signed and waxed, are
still available. I hear a few were opened at Canaipa.
The Gill
Queensland Youth Week is the next big event on the RQ sailing calendar, scheduled for 2 - 5 July. The
Notice of Race is available now. There are two training camps on offer in the lead up to the event: The
Talent Search Coaching Camp with Olympian and futures coach Brendan Casey, and the Green
Fleet Camp, both being held on 30 June - 1 July.
Following
this, on the 10 - 11 July, the Yachtshare Finn Queensland Championships will be held, with 50 of these
amazing Olympic Dinghies expected to compete. Our own Jake Lilley, Australia’s representive at the
upcoming Tokyo Olympics will be there - grab his autograph. Even your Commodore and Rear Commodore will
be competing, although I believe I may be a significant distance away from our Jake!
We are also rapidly approaching the Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel and Brisbane to Hamilton Island
Races, commencing on the 6th August. Early bird entries have been extended, so I suggest taking advantage
of the reduced entry fees.
I would like to extend my sympathies
on behalf of Squadron Members to the family of the recently passed Ron Perry. Ron was a Long-Term Member
of the Club, having joined more than 60 years ago. A funeral service for Ron will be held at 12pm on Thursday
3 June at Sacred Heart Church, 50 Fairway Drive, Clear Island Waters.
Tonight is Junior Presentation evening. Congratulations to all our junior sailors on their achievements
this year and we hope you enjoy your night of celebrations
It
appears it will be a windy weekend so please stay safe on the water.
Your Commodore,
Captain Barry Cuneo
|
Squadron Long-Term member Ron
Perry passed away on Saturday night, 22 May, after a 14 year struggle with cancer, during which he never
lost his sense of humour and always had a positive attitude. Ron joined the Squadron 60 years ago from
sailing Moth dinghies at Southport. He represented Queensland in national championships and continued
his interest in boating, crewing on P/Cdr Mike Tyquin's various boats throughout his life. He will be
sadly missed.
A funeral service for Ron will be held next Thursday,
3 June at Noon at the Sacred Heart Church, 50 Fairway Drive, Clear Island Waters.

Thank you to everyone who has
donated to the Canaipa Long House Project. We have had a flood of donations, particularly from the Canaipa
30th Anniversary Celebrations.
The amount received on the day
adds an approximate $90,000 to the total which now sits at approximately $330,000, more than two thirds
of goal of $500,000 which will cover both the Caretaker's Cottage and Long House.
The Long House Museum is now a certainty. It will display the proud history of RQYS for generations
to come. More of your generous support to get this to completion is needed however, so please consider

Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta & Brisbane to Sunshine Coast
|
|
Entries are now flowing in for
both the Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta and its feeder race Brisbane to Sunshine Coast. SCYC Members and
their families are excited about welcoming this year’s fleet of competing yachts on the Sunshine
Coast. The annual Regatta in mid-July 2021 is generating a lot of interest amongst yachts going north
for the Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island regattas.
Some
Yacht owners without the time this year to sail to north Queensland for the tropical regattas are favouring
SCOR 2021 on the Sunshine Coast.
